Why authorities and media routinely describe a murder as “a [rape/robbery/burglary] gone wrong”

I just came upon and recommend a September 2009 VFR article about a particularly egregious rape-murder in a luxury New York hotel, committed by a hotel employee on a guest in her room, which was also a particularly egregious case of police and media describing a murder as “an X gone wrong,” in this case, as the New York Post put it, a “sex attack gone awry.”
