United colors of Italy

Italian political posters are much more stylishly designed than in America, and when you combine the high style with the habitual cynicism about government it’s hard to believe any of it should be taken seriously. So when I was in Venice recently I was inclined to view the rainbow-colored peace banners fluttering from windows as more a personal and fashion statement than anything else. Italy’s flagging war makes a similar point about disputes there over the peace banner, and also suggests the issue may be related to the question of what nationality can mean in a country assembled only recently out of much more ancient regions, and now increasingly integrated as a member of the EU.

How far they have come since the glory of Rome and the days of ‘Strength and Honor’. Very sad.
