Letting it all hang out: What liberals want to do about guns

Paul K. writes:

One of my gun-owning friends resently observed, “Anyone who thinks he doesn’t need an AR hasn’t looked into the mind of a liberal.” Increasingly, liberals are giving us a glimpse of what’s in their minds: pure round-‘em-up-and-kill-‘em-all hatred directed at tens of millions of law-abiding gun owners. On December 29, 2012 the Des Moines Register published a column by Donald Kaul, formerly a regular columnist for the paper but now retired. It’s impossible to imagine a newspaper publishing such a hate-filled screed were it not directed against a favorite target of the left. (The excuse that he’s employing hyperbole as a rhetorical device would not suffice.)

Here are his proposals for ending gun violence in America:

Repeal the Second Amendment, the part about guns anyway. It’s badly written, confusing and more trouble than it’s worth. It offers an absolute right to gun ownership, but it puts it in the context of the need for a “well-regulated militia.” We don’t make our militia bring their own guns to battles. And surely the Founders couldn’t have envisioned weapons like those used in the Newtown shooting when they guaranteed gun rights. Owning a gun should be a privilege, not a right.

Declare the NRA a terrorist organization and make membership illegal. Hey! We did it to the Communist Party, and the NRA has led to the deaths of more of us than American Commies ever did. (I would also raze the organization’s headquarters, clear the rubble and salt the earth, but that’s optional.) Make ownership of unlicensed assault rifles a felony. If some people refused to give up their guns, that “prying the guns from their cold, dead hands” thing works for me.

Then I would tie Mitch McConnell and John Boehner, our esteemed Republican leaders, to the back of a Chevy pickup truck and drag them around a parking lot until they saw the light on gun control.

It seems many on the left think the time is right to liquidate the class enemy.

James N. writes:

In addition to outrageously violent and threatening blog entries and newspaper comments, legislators in Illinois and NY (and perhaps elsewhere) are introducing “no possession/confiscation/no compensation” laws. The Illinois draft statute makes possession of any modern firearm the same class of felony as forceable rape.

It is a fear of mine that, after this past November, the left may be intoxicated with power, such that they may not perceive correctly the danger that their proposals, if enacted, would create.

Dan R. writes:

In the wake of Newtown and the election, the fascist Left is kicking it up a notch. You posted Paul K. on Donald Kaul’s piece in the Des Moines Register, and it’s elsewhere too. William Anderson at the Rockwell site writes:

… the Daily Kos, which is one of the most influential Democratic Party sites and receives huge amounts of daily traffic … does not repeat Democratic “talking points”; it generates political talking points that later are found in mainstream publications and from Democratic politicians themselves. Thus, when the Daily Kos not only calls for prohibition on all privately-owned firearms and lays out the political and legal road map on how to accomplish that political goal, Libertarians and others need to pay attention. These people are serious and are willing to use violent means to accomplish their ends.
