And another scoop: after Betray-us and Broadwell knew the FBI was investigating them, they appeared together as a couple at a high-profile dinner. Petraeus apparently believed that the FBI would keep the story under wraps, and that, as long as they did so, he could keep his job. What broke it open was the FBI agent/whistleblower who told House Republican leader Eric Cantor about the investigation, which led Cantor to ask FBI director Mueller what was going on. This showed Mueller that the story could not be suppressed, and on election day he told Director of National Intelligence James Clapper about it, who in turn told Petraeus he had to resign.
