Solving a (to me) major puzzle about Atlas Shrugged

In a comment which I posted two days ago but have just expanded, I explain the puzzle of how Ayn Rand in Atlas Shrugged can be alternately worthwhile and insane, even on the same page, even in the same paragraph.
