Can the portrayal of utmost violence be artistically legitimate?

In one of our several discussions on hyper-violent films, a reader brings up Shakespeare’s extremely gory Titus Andronicus and asks, “Is there no place for the exploration in art of violence and nihilism which are, regrettably, a notable feature of the human experience?” I reply.
