Gingrich goes kamikaze

Howie Carr of the Boston Herald is amazed at Newt Gingrich, whom he calls a “suicide bomber” and a “kamikaze” over his Obama-like attacks on Romney for having made too much money in business:

When Newt got into the fight last year, many suspected he wasn’t really a serious candidate, that he was just trying to freshen up the aging Newt “brand,” to jack up his speaking fees. I guess not. The Club for Growth called his comments about Mitt “disgusting.”

The only group that might want him as a speaker now is the Occupy Wall Street Alumni Association.

I have to say, for all my criticisms of Gingrich over the years as a motormouth with no stable self, I would not have expected him to go this far.

I don’t know why anyone is surprised by Newt Gingrich’s vicious attacks upon Mitt Romney from the left. Gingrich has displayed a mean streak, and a left-leaning one, for years. And in my opinion, his entire campaign has been an exercise in vanity from the start. Just as he surely believes that each of his marraiges was “for real”, it is very likely he believes in his own electability as having no limits.

The idea of a campaign for President as some sort of self-fulfillment is more suited to the classic vanity press self-published book than to a serious way to determine who is fit to lead a nation. Perhaps this time Gingrich will self-destruct deeply enough that no one will take him seriously ever again?
