In response to the fact, which she herself has brought out, that the British Welfare State pays unemployed unmarried single adults something substantially higher than $30,000 per year, Carol Iannone writes:

Maybe this is how they can afford all those BlackBerries.

The remark connects not just with our discussion of the British welfare state, but with the entry preceding this one, about Michelle Bachmann and Francis Schaeffer, where I critique the liberal-secularist belief that human desires are the highest reality and must be satisfied by government. Reject God, reject higher moral truth, and you end up with an “impoverished,” “oppressed” population of blacks and yobs who can afford expensive electronic communications appliances that are beyond the reach of the average working man.
