Horowitz warning about the Muslim Brotherhood

M. Jose writes:

In regards to your recent posting on neocons and democracy/freedom-madness:

I received the below e-mail recently from David Horowitz.

It appears that he sees the danger of the Muslim Brotherhood, and thinks that a Mubarak ouster would be a bad thing, although honestly it’s been six or seven years since I’ve paid attention to him (how I got on his mailing list I don’t know but I have been too lazy to get off of it) so I don’t know whether he has traditionally been one of the “freedom-mad” among the neoconservatives.

LA replies:

Absolutely, he and his editors at FP have been among the freedom-mad. In the foremost ranks. At least they were all through the Bush years. They hailed every event in Iraq as: “Now Iraq is free! Now Iraq is a democracy!”, ignoring the fact that according to Freedom House, the most authorititative source on the question of which countries are free, Iraq was then and still is now Not Free. A single election made Iraq a democracy, even though it could only be conducted by locking down the country. He was so much of that view that when in early 2005 Jamie Glazov suggested that Glazov and I have a debate at FP about the Bush freedom ideology, Horowitz scotched it. He didn’t want any critical views of the Bush ideology at his site.

I’ve told how when, in mid 2005 I believe, Iraq ratified a constitution which made sharia the supreme law of the land, Horowitz wrote to me in shock calling this a “disaster.” But then, at least to my knowledge, he never raised that issue again. He suppressed his doubts, because he was so much of the Bush camp that he would not discuss what “Muslim freedom” actually leads to.

However, based on the below Horowitz e-mail, Horowitz is now very much opposed to including the Muslim Brotherhood in a “democratic” Egypt. But the question I can’t help asking is, would Horowitz have reacted like this if it was the Bush administration that was promoting the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt? Based on his course of conduct over the last nine years, one would have to guess that the answer would probably be no. While he might have expressed some worries about the MB and pointed out that they were dangerous to Israel, he would have suppressed his full concerns, out of solidarity with Bush.

Also, in June 2009, during the period when Horowitz was supporting Obama, he didn’t find fault with Obama’s Cairo speech.

Here is the e-mail that Mr. Jose received from Horowitz:

Dear DHFC Supporter,

Egypt is on fire and the flames may soon spread to Jordan and even Saudi Arabia.

The situation on the streets of Cairo is confusing, but so too is the message coming out of the Obama White House. The White House appears to be leaving Hosni Mubarak, an ally for three decades and lynchpin of Mideast stability, twisting slowly in the wind. And worse, it appears to be open to allowing the Muslim Brotherhood play a key role in a “reformed” Egyptian government, as long as the organization renounces violence and supports democracy.

If the Obama White House really believes this is possible, it is even more hopelessly incompetent than we imagined!

The Freedom Center has been warning about the Muslim Brotherhood since 9/11. The Brotherhood is the godfather organization for jihad in the Middle East (and, for that matter, in the U.S. where it operates through the Muslim Student Association and other fronts). Its Palestinian branch, Hamas, is a terrorist organization whose charter calls for the annihilation of Israel. Osama bin Laden was a graduate of the Brotherhood; so was the mastermind of 9/11, Sheik Khalid Mohammed. It opposes the Egyptian-Israeli agreement of 1979, without which Israel would be under the gun as it was in the first few years of its existence and will be again if the Brotherhood takes over.

In suggesting that the Muslim Brotherhood can be a democratic partner in Egypt, the Obama White House has outdone even the Carter administration’s destabilization of the Shah of Iran in 1979 and its welcoming of the theocratic fascist Khoumeni as a “saint.” [LA replies: I’m not aware offhand that Horowitz ever issued similar warnings about the Bush administration’s numerous acts of outreach to Hamas, Hezbollah, etc. For example, when the Bush administration pushed Israel to include Hamas in the PA elections (which I think also was in 2005), Horowitz did not attack that. I could wrong about that however.]

During the present crisis, the Freedom Center has been contacted by talk radio and cable news shows for its take on the Egyptian situation because we, more than any other organization, have documented the “Unholy Alliance” between the left and Radical Islam. That is the title of a book I wrote documenting the collaboration that is now bearing fruit in the demand for “change” in Egypt. From the Bolshevik Revolution, through Mao and the Ayatollah Khoumeni, the left has always seen figures who turned out to be monsters as “reformers.”

But we urgently need your help to get our message out and our pamphlet, Obama and Islam and book, “Unholy Alliance,” to the public. That’s why I’m asking you to follow this link right away to make a contribution of $50 or more. We’ll even send you copies of both pamphlets.

The Freedom Center’s Robert Spencer has noted in daily posts on our website Jihad Watch and in his alarming pamphlet, Obama and Islam, the dangers present in Barack Obama’s “outreach” to the Muslim world, from his speech in Cairo itself to his overtures to the Muslim Brotherhood today. Now the dangers in those misguided and incoherent policies have reached critical mass, threatening two key U.S. allies—Egypt and Israel—and putting the fate of the region at risk, while also strengthening the hand of the Revolutionary Guard in Iran. [LA notes: If you didn’t know that Spencer functions under the rubric of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, go to the “About Robert Spencer” page at JW which informs us: “ROBERT SPENCER is the director of Jihad Watch, a program of the David Horowitz Freedom Center … ” Several years ago, in an e-mail to me, Horowitz referred to Spencer as his “employee.”]

The Freedom Center cannot determine how the present chaos in Egypt will end. But we can educate America about what is at stake. That’s why we need to get “Unholy Alliance” and “Obama and Islam” and the other pamphlets we have produced on the radical Islamic jihad into as many hands as possible. So will you help us today by following this link to make a donation of $50 or more to the Freedom Center’s campaign to tell the Truth About the Muslim Brotherhood? Don’t forget that we’ll send you copies of both the book and pamphlet, as well.

This campaign will circulate our publications about the Muslim Brotherhood’s jihad to members of Congress. It will place ads in college newspapers about how the Brotherhood works in this country through organizations such as the Muslim Student Association and the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR). It will allow me and Robert Spencer to give talks around the country, as well as on radio and cable news shows, about how the radical Islamic jihad is poised to take a huge step forward in Egypt.

We stand at a critical crossroads which has potentially catastrophic implications for the future of Israel and America itself. We need to act quickly. We need to tell the Truth About the Muslim Brotherhood!

I hope I can count on you to help the Freedom Center today by making a donation of $50 or more and take advantage of the opportunity to receive both “Unholy Alliance” and “Obama and Islam.” You will also help our country understand the consequences of the abyss the Barack Obama is leading us into in the Middle East.

Sincerely, David Horowitz
President & Founder

P.S. Help the Freedom Center circulate our pamphlet, Obama and Islam and book, “Unholy Alliance,” to members of Congress, the press, college students and the general public to spread the word about the threat America faces if Egypt falls to the Muslim Brotherhood. Please follow this link right away to make a contribution of $50 or more and we’ll send you copies of both the book and the pamphlet. Thank you.
