Byrd and the Klan

The other day I understated the late Robert Byrd’s involvement in the Ku Klux Klan as merely being a member for a brief time in the late 1930s. In fact he was a local leader and recruiter, apparently from about 1940 to about 1946, when he was 29 years old, though when he ran for Congress in 1952 he said that his active membership in the Klan only lasted for about a year. Wikipedia provides a useful summary.
