It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad Global Warming Scandal

The British Hadley Climate Research Unit’s computers have been hacked. A massive amount of data and emails were download and are now available on the Internet. Some of the emails look very compromising. For example:

Dear Ray, Mike and Malcolm,

Once Tim’s got a diagram here we’ll send that either later today or first thing tomorrow. I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in the real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) amd from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline. Mike’s series got the annual land and marine values while the other two got April-Sept for NH land N of 20N. The latter two are real for 1999, while the estimate for 1999 for NH combined is +0.44C wrt 61-90. The Global estimate for 1999 with data through Oct is +0.35C cf. 0.57 for 1998. Thanks for the comments, Ray.

Phil Jones is the director of the Climate Research Unit, and the “Mann” in the e-mail address is none other than Michael Mann who told Congress oil company executives should be jailed for opposing global warming. This email seems to indicate that data has been doctored to hide a temperature decline that would prove embarrassing to the advocates of global warming. See reports from Hot Air and the Wall Street Journal. VFR readers who want to download and read the documents should go here for a list of links.

This is potentially a very big event in the global warming debate. It could kill Cap and Trade. The left is already trying to spin evidence of the fraud by attacking conservatives. For example the homosexuals at Media Matters are attacking Rush Limbaugh and quoting the attack dog from RealClimate, Gavin Schmidt. However we should not get our hopes up too much. There is so much money riding on climate change, that there will be a massive campaign to try to convince people that the documents don’t really mean what they say. I’m sure they will do anything—yes anything to limit the damage.

We should download everything before it disappears in an avalanche of court orders.

I read something on this several hours ago at American Thinker, via Lucianne. The writer said that on one hand, the e-mails were so self-damning that they seem like a John Le Carre-type set-up to trap warming opponents, but on the other hand the material is so voluminous that it can’t have been faked. It’s very hard to believe that the warming people would openly talk amongst themselves about faking the data. What do you think?

A. Zarkov replies:

Phil Jones has admitted that the “hide the decline” email is authentic and the Real Climate attack dogs are trying to spin that email as not looking like what it is. The most in-depth discussions of the hacked documents and data are to be found at ClimateAudit, but that site is somewhat technical. There’s no doubt the Climate Research Unit was hacked and that some if not all of the emails are authentic. I suppose it’s possible that someone seeded the giant mass with a few sensational, but bogus emails. Ultimately we will know the truth as now we can make Freedom of Information Act Requests for specific emails. One would think that people would not discuss faking data in emails, but sometimes they do as we saw with the Wall Street emails. They could use encryption, but they don’t. Obviously there needs to be an investigation with people compelled to testify under oath, but I don’t think we will see that as the governments themselves seem to be part of the Global Warming hoax, if indeed it is a hoax.

The Global Warming proponents have taken a number of hits lately with the tree core data controversy and the increasing public skepticism about the whole issue of climate change. However, I must remain somewhat pessimistic. So far it looks like Obama is well on his way to the getting the trifecta: health insurance, cap and trade, and amnesty for illegal immigrants. Then it won’t matter if the Democrats lose control of the House in 2010. This is why they are in such a rush.

A. Zarkov continues:

This website has a search engine for the hacked emails. The Washington Post reported on an email from Ben Santer at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to Jones at the Climate Research Unit. One paragraph reads as follows:

I’m really sorry that you have to go through all this stuff, Phil. Next time I see Pat Michaels at a scientific meeting, I’ll be tempted to beat the crap out of him. Very tempted.

The global warming community really has true believers and not real scientists. They are willing to do virtually anything to get what they want. If we take the above paragraph literally, they are not above violence. Santer could have a real problem if this email is authentic. Much of the staff at Livermore Lab have the Department of Energy “Q” clearances. Santer could lose his clearance and even his job over the email.

LA replies:

The head of a scientific institute has openly admitted that he participated in a deliberate, orchestrated scientific hoax? How is that possible?
