What will paleocons defend?

Ilana Mercer has been having a running discussion on the topic, “Paleos Must Defend the West, and That Means Israel Too.” Of course I agree, but sadly I not only think that many paleocons will refuse to defend Israel, because they hate Israel, I think that many of them will refuse to defend the West itself, because they hate the West.

Consider this recent remark by Taki contributor John Zmirak: “Immigration determines whether or not we save our country. Abortion determines whether or not it deserves to be saved.” Well, since America for the last 35 years has allowed large scale abortion, the issue is already settled, isn’t it? America doesn’t deserve to be saved. Meaning that if America were facing a mortal danger, which, Zmirak acknowledges, it is facing from immigration, his response must be that America shouldn’t be defended. And since abortion is also widely practiced in other Western countries (though not as widely as in the U.S.), the West as a whole doesn’t deserve to be saved. Meaning that if Europe were threatened by Islam, which it is, Zmirak will with cold eyes watch her go down rather than support the embattled people trying to defend her.

Instead of seeking to heal our civilization of the sin of abortion, Zmirak says it deserves to be destroyed. If that is not Zmirak’s considered view, if he was only venting his understandable repugnance against abortion but doesn’t seriously mean that America deserves to be destroyed, then he ought to say so. In the absence of such a clarification, however, I would have to conclude that he is a paleocon nihilist, a man who hates America more than he loves the good.

Not necessarily. Zmirak may believe that we still need to defend the U.S. out of mercy and out of hope for change. From a Christian persepctive, “deserves” and “should get” are two different things—after all, we are all sinners who deserve Hell, yet we are glad that God has shown mercy by sending his Son to die for us.
