160 years ahead of his time, John C. Calhoun opposed the Bush Democracy Project

According to Wikipedia’s article on Manifest Destiny, Senator John C. Calhoun of South Carolina opposed the annexation of Mexico, as well as the “mission” aspect of Manifest Destiny, for racial reasons. In a speech in the Senate on January 4, 1848, he said that America should not incorporate Mexico, since “Ours, sir, is the Government of a white race,” while Mexico consisted of Indians and mixed peoples. He then continued, describing the position he opposed:

We are anxious to force free government on all; and I see that it has been urged … that it is the mission of this country to spread civil and religious liberty over all the world, and especially over this continent. It is a great mistake.
