Bush supporter calls his actions “destructive”

The guys at Powerline love President Bush and defend him at every opportunity. But his gross insanity on Israel has gotten even to them. Scott of Powerline quotes at length from Bush’s bizarro press conference with Mahmoud Abbas yesterday and concludes:

President Bush is engaged in the diplomacy of as if, disproved every day by events; it is at the least disappointing, dispiriting, destructive.

Starting in June 2003, when he convened an absurd conference at Sharm el Sheikh and called for a Palestinian state and ordered the Israelis and Arabs to reach an agreement, I have repeatedly condemned Bush for betraying his June 2002 pledge not to work for a Palestinian state unless the Palestinians had dismantled their ideology and infrastructure of terror. During those same four years, the neocons remained silent about the Bush reversal, even as their leader, Norman Podhoretz, repeatedly expressed his total, absolute confidence in Bush on the Israel-Palestinian issue. Only now, when Bush has gone so far as to tell the Israelis that they must end the “occupation” and negotiate the right of return, are the neocons criticizing Bush. If they had started doing the same back in 2003, perhaps that would have dissuaded Bush from proceeding to his present destructive actions. But it’s too late for that now, and all that’s left for the Bush supporters to do is cry that they are shocked, shocked that there is appeasement of terrorists going on in this establishment.
