A people afraid of their own name

By the way, what is this business with the British always writing “the west” and “western civilization” in lower case? What makes these people so, shall we say, excessively deferential that they won’t even capitalize the proper name of their own civilization? Next thing you know, the Brits will be writing “britain,” “england,” and “christianity” in lower case as well.
