Withdraw and strike

Apparently some congressional Democrats, supported by Jonathan Alter at Newsweek, have adopted an Iraq policy very similar to what VFR has advocated for years: get our forces out of democracy-building and out of central Iraq itself to an isolated but nearby spot from which to launch aggressive raids on the enemy, namely Al Qaeda. Our purpose in Iraq, if we still have a legitimate purpose, is not to nursemaid Muslims into building a viable government, an impossible task, but to prevent the coming to power of entities that are unacceptably dangerous to us. It was criminal that Bush, after using our troops so effectively to topple Saddam Hussein, put them in a passive position where they became targets for terrorists.
