A hopeful explanation for Republicans’ unprecedented use of the racism card against Republicans

Andrea C. writes:

Pat Buchanan this morning on the Laura Ingraham show said that he believes the insulting response by George Bush, Linda Chavez and others to opponents of the immigration bill is evidence that they must feel they are beginning to lose, that some originally supportive senators must have begun to change their minds. He said he couldn’t see any other explanation for their blatant language. Let’s hope he’s right. He also said people see that this bill will destroy the country they had.

Meanwhile, David Frum, who has been very outspoken about his and his readers’ displeasure with the president, writes:

It’s Divorce
That’s what has happened between President Bush and his party over this immigration bill. And if they insist on pursuing it, I fear it is what will happen between the Senate GOP leadership and the party base as well. The issue has already all but killed the McCain candidacy.
