The Vatican continues its mortal betrayal of the West

First the Vatican let on that Cardinal Ratzinger’s vocal opposition to Turkish EU membership prior to his becoming Pope was only his personal view. Then, according to the Turkish prime minister during Pope Benedict’s visit to Turkey last year, the pope told the prime minister that while the Vatican stays out of politics it “desires” Turkish EU membership. Subsequent PR damage control by Vatican bigwigs and outside defenders such as Bill Donahue of the Catholic League did not succeed in altering the impression that the Vatican approved of Turkish membership. And now the Vatican, which supposedly stays out of politics, is again openly stating its support for Turkish membership, as reported by Le Figaro and translated by the invaluable Tiberge at Galliawatch. According to Le Figaro, Monsignor Tarciso Bertone, the Secretary of State and number two man at the Vatican, told journalists at a conference on “Christianity and Secularism” that

“…Turkey has also marched on a long road and is marching still…. [W]ith people and governments who respect the basic rules of living together, we can have a dialogue and build together a common good in the European sphere and in the sphere of the world community.”

“Including the entry into the European Union?” asked an Italian journalist.

“Including the entry into Europe,” responded Monsignor Bertone.

Meaning the Vatican is in favor of opening the borders of Europe to 70 million Turkish Muslims.

What the Bush White House is to American nationhood, the Ratzinger papacy is to Christian Europe.
