Conservatives shocked that Bush pushes amnesty

Kathryn Jean Lopez is not the only one who is surprised that the White House talked up Amnesty II tonight. So are a bunch of commenters at Free Republic—surprised, shocked, and very angry, with several of them threatening to give up on the GOP.

How insensible can people be? The president pushed his amnesty / “guest worker” / huge immigration increase with all his might, not letting up for a second, not even bothering to put up a plausible show that he cared about border security. The Freepers don’t know this about Bush? They forgot this about Bush? We’re not talking ancient history here. We’re talking about a huge battle that took place this year, when Bush and his allies strove with fanatical determination to pass a version of the open-borders bill that Bush first proposed in January 2004. But now that the House Republicans, who stopped the bill, have gone down in defeat, Bush has a better shot to get the bill through, and naturally he is talking it up. What then is there to be surprised at here?

It is as though these conservatives have some constitutional inability to hold in their minds for more than five minutes the fact that Bush is not on their side, with the result that they’re constantly surprised at finding out that he isn’t.
