W. lies again

He said in his radio address on Saturday that our goal in Iraq “is clear and unchanging.” “Our goal,” he said, “is victory.”

This, as I’ve explained many times before, is a lie. Our goal in Iraq, to the extent we have one, is not to achieve any kind of military victory over our enemies but to avoid a catastrophe, i.e., total chaos, civil war, mass killings, the collapse of the government, the takeover of Iraq by our enemies. We are not seeking victory but treading water, hoping to stave off drowning in the hope that, somehow, the waters will eventually recede.
