The benefits of an established church

The Queen, opening the General Synod of the Church of England, gave an eloquent statement on the lasting significance and purpose of “the gospel of Jesus Christ,” and the Telegraph celebrates the fact that England has an established Church, which ensures “a sacred space in the public square.” From my own visits in England, that is my experience as well. It is something America lacks. This doesn’t mean I am advocating an established church for America. Nor am I defending the extremely decadent Church of England. But an established church and a monarchy add a transcendent dimension to society and its institutions, and even the experience of daily life.
