Down in the Flood

Into my mind today as I was reading the survivors’ stories discussed below came the opening words of Bob Dylan’s 1971 song, “Down in the Flood”: “Crash on the levee, Mama / Water’s gonna overflow.” As usual with Dylan, the breakup of a love affair is a metaphor for the end of the world—or rather, reflecting Dylan’s true priorities, the end of the world is a metaphor for the breakup of a love affair.
