Stephen A. Douglas on slavery, Deroy Murdock on homosexual marriage: libertarian brothers under the skin

Here’s a VFR article and discussion from 2003 that new (and old) readers may find of interest. In it, I compare Stephen A. Douglas’s popular sovereignty position on slavery, that each new territory or state should have the freedom to choose whether it wanted slavery or not (so as to avoid a national conflict over slavery), with Deroy Murdock’s libertarian position on marriage, that the institution of marriage should be privatized (in order to avoid public controversy over homosexual marriage).
