Yes, JPII was great—when he went to Poland in 1979

I’ve said over and over that John Paul II played a great role in helping bring down Soviet Communism, but that the rest of his papal career was a disaster for Christianity and the West. George Will has a column today, “A great man has passed.” It deals exclusively with the Pope’s great role in helping bring down Soviet Communism. It doesn’t mention a single other aspect of his career.
