Do we want Moslems to break free of their shackles?

A passing—and forbidden—thought. I’ve always been bewildered by the enthusiasm many people have expressed about the modernization of China and the prospect of its emergence as a great and expanding power in the world. Why, I said to myself, would any sane American want China to become a global power?

Well, it occurs to me that it’s the same with our desire to democratize and modernize the Moslem countries. The idea is that this would free the Moslems from their three-century-long decline and enable them to participate more fully in the larger world. But the same question arises: why would any sane Westerner want Moslems to play a larger role in the world?
