Arrested Nichols still escorted by female officer

The rampaging courthouse killer Brian Nichols has been re-arrested, but the egalitarian mindset that allowed him to murder and escape (“Women are capable of doing anything men are capable of doing,” the D.A. told us after Nichols had overpowered a female officer and shot dead the judge and several other people) is as fixed in place as ever. As though symbolically assuring this nation of Eloi that we are still a nation of Eloi, the officer escorting Nichols after his arrest, like the officer escorting him at the time of his escape, is a female. The only difference is that this officer is youngish and white, with messy blond hair, instead of being a 51-year-old black grandmother. But still, isn’t it worth it? I mean, doesn’t it make us feel good about how progressive our society is, about how far we’ve gone beyond the limiting stereotypes of the past, when we see a thin, frizzy-haired white woman with narrow shoulders in charge of a powerfully built, and still defiant, black murderer?
