Kerry’s speech for war, October 9, 2002

Two years ago today, October 9, 2002, Senator Kerry delivered a speech on the Senate floor in support of giving President Bush authorization to make war on Iraq, at the president’s sole discretion. Two days later, on October 11, 2002, Kerry voted with 76 other senators for the authorization (the key text of which is quoted here). In his speech, excerpted in the Mobile Register, Kerry was very strong—much stronger than I had realized—about the seriousness of the threat posed by Saddam Hussein and the need for military action to stop it. Kerry’s statements in October 2002 give the lie to almost everything he has said about Iraq in the succeeding two years.
