Letter to a Republican opinion-maker

The most effective way of spending our energies on this issue is to contact every Republican congressman and opinionmaker and let them know that Bush’s “legalize-the-illegals” proposal threatens to destroy the Republican base. Here is an e-mail I sent to Lucianne Goldberg, hostess of the most pro-Bush website in the country:

Dear Lucianne,

Bush must think he is so secure with the Republican base, including his fans at Lucianne.com, that there’s NOTHING he could possibly do that would alienate them enough to threaten his re-election—even his advocacy of one of the most radical pieces of legislation in American history, a mandate for virtually open borders. I think there’s a reasonable chance that next November will prove Bush wrong in his assumption.

Personally, I hope he’s defeated, even if that means bringing an anti-American nutcase like Dean to power. As horrible as that would be, a Bush defeat is the ONLY way to discredit and stop the leftward-moving Odyssey of the Republican party that Bush has orchestrated.

Sincerely,
Lawrence Auster

P.S. If you don’t like it when conservatives threaten not to support Bush, I would respectfully suggest that instead of criticizing us, you tell Bush that he ought to withdraw his proposal.

Mr. Auster’s suggestions are a call to arms. Let’s not miss this opportunity. What if the code breakers had failed to apply themselves before the Battle of Midway? Think of how badly you will feel if we lose, and you did not help.

I wrote another representative today opposing Bush’s amnesty, and I am ashamed that’s all I could manage. Here is a challenge to commentators here. On any day you make a comment here, ensure that you have written at least one representative about this amnesty issue and you have reported here that you have done so. This will help you to develop the discipline that is needed to win political battles and to encourage others by your example. Perhaps even a contest would be in order: the most represetatives written by any commentator each week; the honor system would be in effect.

Do this now, and chances are you won’t have to endure a Valley Forge one day. So plan some time this weekend to catch up if you missed writing a few days this week.

Also phone the White House. Make them feel the heat. (Though it may be difficult to get through.)
