Has Bush lost his way?

The administration has gone south in the war on terror, laments Michael Ledeen. Policy is now being set by the appeasers such as Colin Powell. The haste to hand over authority to some weak and incapable Iraqi government would only motivate the Saddamites. The administration is also in full appeasement mode with Iran, no longer demanding that Iran turn over Al Qaeda members, but instead seeking to enhance diplomatic relations with Iran’s government, which remains the principal supporter of terrorism in the entire region. “As of now,” writes Ledeen, “there is reason to think that this administration does not understand that we are at war. The president occasionally reiterates the old themes (we make no distinction between terrorists and the states that support them, etc., etc.) but his administration does not act on them.”

Could the things discussed in this article be a factor?:

http://www.lewrockwell.com/ips/lobe11.html

The article, from Friday’s edition of LewRockwell.com, begins,

“A major Pentagon hawk has abruptly resigned his post in a move that, in the context of other recent developments, is likely to fuel speculation that the White House might be trying to soften the harder edges of its controversial policies.”

The link in my comment above doesn’t seem to work. Anyone interested may go to www.LewRockwell.com and click where it says “Last 7 days” in the left-hand margin, a little more than half-way down the column. Then click on “Friday.” Friday’s table of contents lists the article (seventh one down), called “Hawks Going Down” by Jim Lobe. (All LewRockwell.com authors are of course against the war and this one’s no exception.)

I have never been a fan of Michael “creative destruction is our middle name” Ledeen. Can you imagine Russell Kirk advocating “creative destruction” and endless “regime change” throughout the world? You would think after the neocon’s inability to show that Iraq had ties to OBL or had WMDs they would show a little hesitancy about the next target of their venom, but I guess not.

For all I know, Sadaam had chemical weapons and supported Al Quaeda, but people like Ledeen aren’t helping the pro-war side at all.

I also reject Ledeen’s call for “creative destruction,” as I’ve written here and have told him personally. At the same time, I think his insights about the Terror Masters and what we need to do to defeat our terrorist and Islamist enemies are most valuable and need to be a part of the debate.
