Do computers need to be completely redesigned?

Peter Neumann, an 80-year-old and still active computer security expert, argues that the horrible security vulnerabilities of today’s computers and applications are due to the complexity in which they have evolved and to the fact that each problem is solved with a “dirty fix” which only adds to the complexity. He says that the only true solution, as expensive as it would be, is to redesign all hardware and software from the ground up. The NYT has an article on him.
