Abbreviations and mathematical symbols

A request to commenters: Please do not use abbreviations in place of full words. Spell words out. For example, many people use abbreviations for the names of states. That may be all right for casual e-mails, but not for published text, as in this blog. If you use many abbreviations in your comments, then I have to do the extra work of manually changing them to words.

Mathematical symbols should also be avoided. For example, many people today will write “30+” instead of “more than 30.” This is not desirable. Our medium of communication is the English language. Thank you.

Speaking of mathematical symbols, VFR never uses the percent symbol, %. If readers use it in comments, my custom software changes it automatically to “percent.”
