Why we make a god of “democracy”

In the entry, “The horrible costs of ‘democracy,’” we discuss how America’s catastrophic dealings with the Muslim world over the last ten years, culminating in the currently intensified Muslim hatred of America, have stemmed from our adoption of “democracy” as our highest ideal—democracy in the minimalist sense of universal suffrage, rather than in the larger sense of a constitutional republic with limitations on government power, freedom of speech, and so on. In a further comment, Jim Kalb explains why this idealization of crude majoritarianism is an inevitable outcome of liberalism.
