On America’s underutilized scientific and poetic talent

Several readers have responded to Malcolm Gladwell’s statement that of the one million or so blacks in prison in the U.S., “Surely there must be hundreds—if not thousands—of potential professional athletes in that number, not to mention scientists or entrepreneurs or poets.”
