The personality of a culture

In the thread on the photograph of Meryl Streep proudly holding aloft the Oscar, I once again explain why it’s proper to write about the appearance and personality of public figures. We are not just abstract entities supporting and opposing different ideas and positions. We are quality-bearing beings, and our individual qualities also convey the qualities of our culture. Just as we have personalities, our culture has a personality. Modern technological society militates against and suppresses this dimension of reality, a tendency that has been most damaging to conservatism.
