Gingrich declares war on Romney

In an interview yesterday, Gingrich said that Romney is not a conservative, that Romney cannot win the nomination, and that Gingrich and Rick Santorum (whom Gingrich praised) “will be defining Romney out of the mainstream of the Republican party.”

Whoa. That’s the party’s front-runner that Gingrich is talking about. I can’t think of a Republican nomination battle since the Reagan-Ford contest in 1976 that sounded so bitter. And let’s remember who won that election: Jimmy Carter.

Note: I have not seen the anti-Gingrich ads which Gingrich says were so false and unfair, and which now appear to have triggered his all-out attack on Romney. Were those ads as untruthful as Gingrich claims, or were they just recounting (as I have read) his record of receiving $1.6 million from Freddie Mac in the lead-up to the finance crisis and his support for anti-global warming measures?
