Has it already happened?

Following Paul Kersey’s latest article on race and college sports, a commenter at SBPDL writes:

Anyone here over 60 years old?

Does the ‘1961 America’ you remember remotely resemble the America you see today?

America did not survive.

We live in a different nation with different values, different laws, different heroes and revised history.

Never mind the 1961 America, as far as I’m concerned the 1981 America did not survive. We are a different nation with different values, different laws, different heroes and revised history relative to this comparatively short time ago. If you had told me in 1981 that in 30 years we would be where we are now, I would have said you’re out of your mind. The current situation would have been unimaginable to me even in 1991, when we still had a decent, patriotic President (for all his faults) and our national culture and politics, though seriously flawed, did not seem irretrievably broken.
