The pope’s call for a world state

For those who may have missed it, I highly recommend our still-continuing discussion of Pope Benedict’s 2009 encyclical Caritas in Veritate in which he advocated, in shockingly frank and even brutal terms (“the concept of the family of nations [must acquire] real teeth”), a single global government with power to enforce its dictates on all the nations of the earth. A couple of readers attempted to defend Benedict’s proposal on the grounds that “subsidiarity” would mitigate the centralization of all political authority. But this argument could not stand up to examination. Under contemporary political circumstances, the Catholic and EU concept of “subsidiarity” is a transparent fig leaf draped over a leftist reach for total power.
