Meltdown of a climate god

Doug Powers has the transcript (and here is a YouTube audio) of Al Gore’s recent “b*llsh*t”-laced tirade in Aspen over the fact that people no longer believe in manmade global warming.

The former Vice President and almost President of the United States said:

They pay pseudo-scientists to pretend to be scientists to put out the message: “This climate thing, it’s nonsense. Man-made CO2 doesn’t trap heat. It may be volcanoes.” B*llsh*t! “It may be sun spots.” B*llsh*t! “It’s not getting warmer.” B*llsh*t!”

When you go and talk to any audience about climate, you hear them washing back at you the same crap over and over and over again. There’s no longer a shared reality on an issue like climate even though the very existence of our civilization is threatened. People have no idea! … It’s no longer acceptable in mixed company, meaning bipartisan company, to use the goddamn word climate. It is not acceptable. They have polluted it to the point where we cannot possibly come to an agreement on it.

Not only do people no longer believe in manmade global warming, but, to repeat Gore’s last complaint, “It’s no longer acceptable in mixed company, meaning bipartisan company, to use the goddamn word climate. It is not acceptable. They have polluted it to the point where we cannot possibly come to an agreement on it.” Gosh. Now Gore knows a little bit of how conservatives feel, who not only face disagreement when they try to raise a variety of urgently important issues (not just one issue) pertaining to the health and survival of our civilization, but are actively harmed in their job, career, and social life if they do. And they handle this genuine oppression a lot better than Gore handles the false oppression of mere disagreement

Also note Gore’s frustration over the loss of a shared understanding of reality as the basis for human society. Conservatives know something about that too, and, again, they deal with this experience a lot better than Gore does, because, unlike Gore, they never thought of themselves as god-men possessing the one and only truth.
