Trump announces he is not running for president

His main reason seems to be this:

“I have spent the past several months unofficially campaigning and recognize that running for public office cannot be done half heartedly. Ultimately, however, business is my greatest passion and I am not ready to leave the private sector.” [Italics added.]

In other words, he lacked the fire in the belly. Given the extreme demands of a presidential candidacy, if that readiness in the gut is not there, then no matter how many other factors may militate in favor of a candidacy, the candidacy is not going to happen.

This also seems to be the reason why Mike Huckabee chose not to run. In his announcement Saturday night, after confidently asserting all the reasons supporting his candidacy, he abruptly changed course and said, “My heart says no.” His failure to explain why his heart felt that way made the announcement a poor piece of work. But I guess what he meant was that he lacked the fire in the belly.
