The newsmagazine of transgression

Tim W. writes:

Re your entry, “The Paper of Transgression,” Time Magazine is all set for Easter with a cover story on the death of hell. They highlight liberal pastor Rob Bell, who promotes a universalist, non-judgmental Christianity which Time hopes will be the wave of the future.

LA replies:

Isn’t it wonderful how this supposed news magazine strives mightily to reshape our worldview with every issue—and always in the direction of radical liberalism?

Jonah O. writes:

Just a brief note:

The doctrine of hell is a bit shaky in terms of biblical grounding (though nowhere near as shaky as liberal univeralism, I’ll grant).

LA replies:

Agreed. Jesus’ statements about hell are clearly psychological or metaphorical; he is not describing a literal place.

As my rector once put it to us in a class, hell is not a physical place, it is a state of being; it is the state of having separated oneself from God.

James P. writes:

Why, it’s straight out of John Lennon’s Imagine (“no Hell below us”)! We all know that the next step is the death of Heaven (“above us only sky”). And after that, we immanentize the eschaton through socialistic transnational visionary schemes (“no possessions, a brotherhood of man, all the people sharing all the world, etc.”). Hooray for non-judgmental universalism!
