After a long winter, a song for the unofficial first day of spring

Even the songs from Bob Dylan’s less-than-genius period in the late sixties and early seventies have something that only Dylan could have given them. I myself haven’t listened to this song in over 30 years, but today as I was walking around my neighborhood with a friend it came to mind. Unfortunately, all the YouTubes of Dylan recordings were taken off the Web some time ago, so I can only provide the lyrics. (Update: a reader has found a working recording.)

Normally winter is my favorite season and I don’t look forward to the beginning of spring. This year is different.

New Morning
by Bob Dylan (1970)

Can’t you hear that rooster crowin’?
Rabbit runnin’ down across the road
Underneath the bridge where the water flows through.
So happy just to see you smile
Underneath this sky of blue
On this New Morning
New Morning
On this New Morning
With you.

Can’t you hear that motor turnin’?
Automobile comin’ into style
Comin’ down the road for a country mile
Or two.
So happy just to see you smile
Underneath this sky of blue
On this New Morning
New Morning
On this New Morning
With you.

The night passed away so quickly
It always does when you’re with me.

Can’t you feel that sun a-shinin’?
Ground hog runnin’ by a country stream
This must be the day when all of my dreams
Come true.
So happy just to be alive
Underneath this sky of blue
On this New Morning
New Morning
On this New Morning
With you.

So happy just to be alive
Underneath this sky of blue
On this New Morning
New Morning
On this New Morning
With you.
