“Hawaii’s governor wants to reveal Obama birth info”

From the AP, linked at Lucianne.com:
HONOLULU—Democratic Gov. Neil Abercrombie wants to find a way to release more information about President Barack Obama’s birth and dispel conspiracy theories that he was born elsewhere. Abercrombie was a friend of Obama’s parents and knew him as a child, and is deeply troubled by the effort to cast doubt on the president’s citizenship. The newly elected Democrat will ask the state attorney general’s office and health officials about how he can make public more of Obama’s birth documentation from Aug. 4, 1961, spokeswoman Donalyn Dela Cruz said Tuesday.

Maybe the 71 year old hippie Abercrombie (see also this story) is sincere, and thinks that he can dispel the suspicions about Obama’s natural born citizen status and discredit the birthers by releasing Obama’s birth certificate. It doesn’t seem to have occurred to Abercrombie that it is Obama himself who has relentlessly kept his birth certificate concealed over the last several years, and therefore that Obama must have a compelling reason to have done so. So I would expect that Gov. Hippie will soon be receiving a discreet call from the White House telling him to lay off.

It will be most interesting to see how the mainstream media respond when Abercrombie suddenly goes silent on the issue after making such a fuss about his desire to get the truth out. I would expect that by tomorrow or the day after, the name Neil Abercrombie will have disappeared from the MSM.

Let us not underestimate the skills at misdirection that have been employed in the service of airbrushing virtually all of Obama’s past. Some version of “modified truth” can be employed that will enable Governor Abercrombie to fulfill the letter of his pledge, while continuing to cover up whatever it is that Obama wants hidden.

Previous attempts have involved the shell game of “what is a birth certificate”, so some modified version of this might suffice. A heavily redacted document might be produced that would “prove” to partisans of the Left there’s nothing being hidden, while continuing to hide whatever it is that Obama is hiding, just for one example. Or another variation of the “Certificate Of Live Birth” could be produced.

Still another alternative would be the tragic, truly tragic, revelation that sadly, the original document much sought has somehow been misfiled and cannot be found, but diligent state employees will continue to search in the hopes it will be found Real Soon Now. Lots of paens to the humble workers, combined with discreet mentions of the effects of wild budget cutting …

There are any number of ways this can play out. But I agree, the Governor of Hawaii likely has received or soon will receive a phone call from the White House, a call that may well be a surprise to him.

Another reader wrote about this, and I replied to him:

These speculative points and theories have all been advanced many times, are quite familiar to anyone who has followed the issue, and don’t add anything to the central question which is the only one I want to emphasize now: the missing birth certificate.

What if it turns out, demonstrably proven, that the state of Hawaii cannot vouch legally and objectively for Obama’s birth? That he has no legal credentials for running for the presidency?

What would be done in that case? Would he be allowed to complete his first term in office and then be ruled ineligible for a second term? Or would he be required to leave office immediately with the presidency being turned over to the Vice-President for the remainder of the term? There being no precedent, are there formal rules for such a situation?

What would be the effect on American history—to know that we had an “illegal” president? That there was a perversion of American history?

LA replies:

I don’t have a definite answer. But see Clark Coleman’s comments on this point, deep in the long December 2008 thread on the natural born citizen issue. In that discussion, I had said that the truth, while desired and needed, would not have any practical effect on Obama’s tenure in office. Mr. Coleman pointed out why this was not necessarily the case.

A reader writes:

I’ve posted 128 entries on this issue since June ‘08, all fact-based:

I think it’s highly likely that Obama was born in Hawaii. My points are (a) he hasn’t definitively proved it; and (b) the MSM and poliicians have consistently lied about the basic, indisputable facts of this matter.

For just a few (of many) examples, Howard Kurtz claimed that Hawaii had said things they didn’t, FactCheck did the same, and Hawaii’s former governor made false statements (that she never corrected) about what her officials had said.

It’s extremely dangerous to have the political class try to strong-arm lies into facts, yet most “birthers” let them by engaging in wild theories and so on. If they just concentrated on how the MSM and politicians have lied and misled about this issue they could help discredit some of the bad guys.
