A poor prognostication?

Late last week, a reader sent me an item about some UN body that is floating the idea of controlling the Internet. I said not to worry, the fact that some people are promoting such a plan doesn’t mean it’s anywhere close to being implemented, especially in an enforceable form, and the obstacles such a measure would face would be very formidable. Also, there will always be people who desire to have such control, so we can’t go into a panic every time they talk about it. She thanked me for putting her fears to rest.

Almost immediately after that exchange, the Web suddenly seemed to be filled with stories about various parties in the U.S. and Europe wanting to control the Internet. Drudge in particular has been posting many such articles.
