Brief reply to Richard Spencer

I’ve just read Richard Spencer’s article, “Austercized,” which is about my judgmental approach to those I see as inadequate or beyond-the-bounds conservatives generally, and about my strong disapproval of certain statements at his new website, Alternative Right, in particular. I am glad to see that Mr. Spencer has not taken personally my criticisms of his site, and that his article is not a personal attack on me of the kind to which I am all too accustomed. Instead, he does something that is rare today. He offers reasoned and civilized criticisms of an intellectual adversary in a spirit that makes discussion possible. Whether we will be able to come to substantive common ground is another matter. The piece raises weighty questions and I will not be able to reply to it right away, but I will reply soon.
