Female reservist with small children recalled to active duty

Van Wijk writes:

A female soldier reports to Ft. Benning, GA with her kids.

Whenever you see a story like this, realize that ALL military enlistment contracts, to include enlistment in the National Guard or Reserves, are for 8 years. So say you enlist for 4 years active duty. Your actual obligation is 4 years active duty, and 4 more years inactive reserve service. When in inactive reserve status, you may be recalled to active duty at any time until your contract expires.

The service (at least when I enlisted) makes no effort to hide this fact. I don’t have a lot of sympathy for those who don’t read or comprehend the contract they’re signing.

LA replies:

Which would be better in your view, that the Army have active female personnel with small children who require Army provided child day care, or that she be granted an exemption from serving because she has small children?
