How we know that consciousness is not material

A commenter says that we know that the beginning of life and the beginning of consciousness were material events, because they happened in the material universe. In reply, I quote the opening of P.D. Ouspensky’s wonderful book Tertium Organum, where he establishes two irrefutable facts about existence. These two facts are the beginning of all sensible thought about the nature of reality and of our place in it.
