One afternoon, two opinions

A long-time reader writes:

[McCain’s] mission is to universalize, diversify, and dissolve America. This is called patriotism. Sacrificing our nation’s wealth and blood in an unending utopian quest to stabilize and democratize Muslim countries that will never be our friends is called “Country First.” We just forgot to ask which country.

You are in better than excellent form today.

Another long-time reader writes:

Today at The Corner (3:50 p.m.) Jay Nordlinger says: “And the campaign of hate and vilification against [Palin] has been one of the most disgusting things I have ever witnessed in American public life.” VFR would fit his description.

LA replied to the second reader:

I am stricken that you feel this way.

What has VFR said about Palin that adds up to a campaign of hate and vilification that is one of the most disgusting things ever witnessed in American public life?

LA continues:

As an example of VFR’s treatment of Palin, here is a current discussion that features criticisms of her talents from a couple of commenters who once had hopes for her as a conservative leader but no longer do, and some strong criticisms of her—by a few commenters and me—concerning a commenter’s report about her holding her baby above her head on stage on Saturday as thousands cheered. The remarks in this thread are probably the strongest negative remarks made about Palin among the many threads that VFR has had on this subject since August 29. But there is nothing here that could be remotely called hate and vilification. What we have here are rational and thoughtful criticism of her abilities, and strong disapproval of a couple of her actions that were so offensive, namely having Levi Johnston appear at the GOP convention, and making her baby a symbol of the campaign by brandishing him over her head on stage. (Gerald M., who reported on the holding-Trig-above-her-head moment, says that CNN showed it repeatedly about 2 p.m. Saturday. He’s looking for the video online.)
