Where have all the conservatives gone?

In a lengthy thread last May in which we discussed Peter Brimelow’s criticisms of the late William Buckley in particular, and the downfall of National Review in general, Gintas made one of the most succinct comments I’ve ever seen about the character and fate of the conservative movement, worthy of inclusion in a book of quotations:

Did [Buckley] build a Conservative movement, or just a “Win The Cold War” movement? You’d think a conservative movement based on the Permanent Things would have outlasted the Cold War a little.

Singalong in the Pete Seeger style:

Where have all the righties gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the righties gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the righties gone?
Women tricked them every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the women gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the women gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the women gone?
Taken lib’rals every one
When will they ever learn?
When will they ever learn?

Where have all the lib’rals gone?
Long time passing
Where have all the lib’rals gone?
Long time ago
Where have all the lib’rals gone?
Gone as lefties every one
When will we ever learn?
When will we ever learn?
