Signs of life

Silvio Berlusconi’s ‘iron fist’ laws approved

Soldiers could be sent into Italy’s cities, illegal immigrants will be imprisoned and all non-serious court cases will be frozen for a year under new measures approved by Italy’s senate.

Is Italy doing enough to save itself? Of course not. But here, at least, is life instead of death.

Evariste writes:

“The senate voted 166 to 123 to approve a wide-ranging package of measures which will allow Silvio Berlusconi to govern Italy with an iron fist.”

This is the sort of shameless lying that we to have to put up with from the media. Laws aimed at giving Berlusconi greater powers to deal with illegal immigrants are going to let him “govern Italy with an iron fist.” As if he is now an unopposable fascist dictator, a modern Mussolini. Foreigners who are in Italy illegally are Italy, for that writer’s purposes.

LA replies:

I’m so naive. My right-wing Id was so pleased to see the phrase “govern with an iron fist” used in reference to the illegal immigrant-infested Italy that it didn’t occur to me that this was a liberal set-up.
