Hamilton Heights trial continues

David B. writes:

The Columbia Spectator is posting a running account of the trial in the Hamilton Heights atrocity. The judge said today that the lawyers will conclude testimony this week. Closing arguments should be next Monday.

I wish every trial of interest had this kind of coverage, giving you a panoramic view of the trial, telling about each witness, and the basic information provided by each witness. Naturally the newspapers never think of doing anything like this. But once upon a time in America, they did. Newspapers told their readers what was happening in the world. Important trials would be recounted in a narrative, coherent, dramatic fashion. Papers didn’t just toss disconnected nuggets at their readers.
